At a glance

  • Gamma-stabilized for 25–50 kGy without the pronounced yellowing seen in general-purpose polycarbonate.
  • Retains optical clarity and impact strength after irradiation, so parts can be inspected visually post-sterilization.
  • Supported by USP Class VI and ISO 10993-4 and -5 testing for limited body contact.
  • Covered by an FDA Drug Master File, shortening the regulatory path for device submissions.
  • High-viscosity grade suited to transparent housings and blood-set components.

Features & benefits

  • Radiation-stabilized formulationColour shift after gamma is controlled, so a clear part still reads as clear to a clinician after sterilization.
  • High notched impact strengthTolerates drop and clamping loads in instrument housings without brittle failure at the gate or knit lines.
  • Amorphous, low-shrink behaviourPredictable, near-isotropic shrinkage helps hold tolerance on mating luer and housing features.
  • Documented biocompatibility packageUSP Class VI and ISO 10993 data already exist, so device teams test the finished device rather than the raw resin.
  • Transparency at 3.2 mm wallPermits visual inspection of fluid path and air bubbles through a moulded wall, removing the need for a separate sight window.

Gamma irradiationCompatibleConfirm with producerFormulated for gamma service; impact strength is largely retained at typical single-dose device levels.Radiation stabilizer suppresses the strong yellowing seen in general-purpose PC. Some shift remains and is dose-dependent.
E-beamCompatibleConfirm with producerComparable to gamma. The higher dose rate typically produces slightly less colour shift for an equivalent dose.Dose-dependent; generally less pronounced than gamma at equal dose.

Dry heatNot recommendedNot applicableTypical dry-heat cycles run at or above 160 °C, past the point where this grade softens.Thermal yellowing and distortion expected.

Maximum dose and cycle counts require producer validation data, so we show "Confirm with producer" rather than a figure. Retention and discoloration notes are qualitative. Sterilization must always be validated on the finished device.

Data reconciliation

A researched value disagreed with the figure already in our catalog. We keep serving the catalog value and surface the disagreement here rather than silently overwriting it — a mismatch between two published sources is itself information you may want to chase.

Makrolon Rx1805 — engineering FAQs

Can Makrolon Rx1805 be autoclaved?
Not for repeat cycles. Saturated steam hydrolyses polycarbonate, causing embrittlement and crazing over repeated exposure, and at 134 °C the cycle temperature also exceeds this grade's 126 °C HDT at 1.80 MPa, so parts may distort under load. If your device needs steam sterilization, look at a polysulfone such as Udel P-1700 or a PPSU such as Radel R-5500. This is an engineering assessment drawn from the grade's own thermal data, not a producer statement.
How does Makrolon Rx1805 hold up to gamma sterilization?
This grade is radiation-stabilized specifically for gamma service, which is its primary intended sterilization route. It retains clarity and impact strength far better than general-purpose polycarbonate, which yellows noticeably. Some dose-dependent colour shift still occurs. We do not hold a maximum dose figure, so confirm the qualified dose range with Covestro for your cycle.
Is Makrolon Rx1805 BPA-free?
No. All polycarbonate is polymerised from bisphenol A, so no PC grade can be BPA-free. Residual free monomer is controlled by the producer's specification. If a BPA-free claim is a hard requirement, consider a cyclic olefin polymer such as Zeonex 690R or a polyester-based alternative.
What body contact duration is Makrolon Rx1805 qualified for?
The grade record classifies it for limited contact, meaning 24 hours or less under ISO 10993-1, and it carries USP Class VI along with ISO 10993-4 and -5 testing. For prolonged or permanent contact you need a grade with a matching dossier — Pellethane 2363-80A covers prolonged contact and Zeniva ZA-500 PEEK covers permanent implant use.
Can Makrolon Rx1805 be wiped down with isopropyl alcohol or CaviCide?
Brief wipe-down is generally tolerated, but polycarbonate is prone to environmental stress cracking in alcohols and quat disinfectants. The risk rises sharply where the part carries moulded-in stress or an applied load. Qualify the actual part with your cleaning protocol rather than relying on a resin-level rating, and design to keep stress out of surfaces that will be wiped.
How should Makrolon Rx1805 be dried before moulding?
Published guidance is 120 °C for two to three hours in a dry-air dryer, targeting a maximum moisture content of 0.02% before processing. Polycarbonate hydrolyses in the melt if moulded wet, which shows up as splay and reduced impact strength. These figures are machine-extracted and pending review, so confirm against the current TDS.

Property comparison vs Pellethane 2363-80A

Makrolon Rx1805 and Pellethane 2363-80A were tested to different standards on several properties. We only place two numbers side by side when the methods actually support it — and we say so, with the standard's own words, when they don't.

Comparability is decided by test standard and condition, not by the raw number. A value under ASTM D256 (J/m) and one under ISO 180 (kJ/m²) measure different physical quantities and are never converted here.

Processing & design notes

Primary process

Injection molding

Typically injection molded; verify drying requirements and melt temperature against the producer datasheet.

Structural role

Rigid transparent structural polymer — clear housings and components needing impact strength.

Typically paired with

  • A TPE overmold for grip or sealing
  • A radiopaque additive for imaging
  • A compatible solvent-bond adhesive

Engineering watch-outs

  • Hygroscopic — dry to the producer-specified moisture level before molding to avoid hydrolytic degradation and splay.
  • Verify heat-deflection temperature against your autoclave cycle before assuming steam compatibility.
  • Always qualify the specific lot and grade against your own device master record and validation plan.

Qualitative guidance only. We don't publish processing windows — confirm melt and mold temperatures, drying, and shrinkage against the producer technical data sheet and your own part qualification.
